Two Kansas City, MO Local 42 Members Killed in Building Collapse

The IAFF is saddened to report that Kansas City, MO Local 42 members Larry Leggio, 43, and John Mesh, 39, died in the line of duty October 12 as they were rescuing residents from an apartment building fire. Two other fire fighters – Chris Anderson and Dan Werner –were injured and are being treated at a local hospital.“Brothers and Leggio and Mesh were two of our best and will be missed by everyone who knew them well,” says IAFF General President Harold Schaitberger. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families.”
IAFF 2nd District Vice President Mark Woolbright is in Kansas City, along with state and local leaders. “We are doing whatever we can to assist the families of our fallen and our injured during this difficult time.”
On the night of October 12, multiple units were dispatched to a massive apartment fire in the northeastern side of Kansas City, Missouri. Fire fighters, including Leggio, Mesh, Anderson and Werner, immediately upon arrival began rescuing the building’s trapped occupants. But, it soon became clear that the structure was rapidly deteriorating. All fire fighters were ordered to evacuate. Moments later, a portion of the east side of the building collapsed, trapping four fire fighters.
Fire fighters outside the building rushed to pull the four out, but Leggio and Mesh’s injuries were too severe. Both were pronounced dead at the hospital. Anderson and Werner were also transported to the hospital with injuries, but they were expected to recover. Leggio, a 17-year veteran, is survived by his wife, mother and several other family members. Mesh, an 11-year veteran, is survived by his wife, four daughters, mother and other family members.
