Mayor Berry Denies our MOU

Dear Members, Mayor Berry denied our proposal submitted on June 17, 2010. The Berry Administration presented us with $1,287,000 in wage cuts and $224,250 in health care premium increase (from 83% -17% to 80% -20%) for a total of $1,511,250. We responded with an MOU proposal that totaled $1,563,250 in savings in addition to deferring our contractual salary increase (3.6 million) for up to two years, extending our contract and forgoing any future negotiations/raises for three years. Our proposal is $52,000 more than what was requested by the Administration to compensate for the AFD budget deficit. The Berry Administration is obviously using our City's budget crisis as a pretext to try to open our contract and balance the budget on the backs of Fire Fighters and their families. The actions taken by this Administration will have a negative effect on public safety and your safety. We cannot afford to have our most experienced Fire Fighters retire prematurely because the City does not have the means to compensate with several cadet classes for the rate of attrition that will ensue. These premature vacancies may incur an uncontrollable increase in overtime which could cause potential safe staffing issues. This will likely impede our ability to safely deliver Fire and EMS services to the community at a level that they have come to expect and deserve. It is truly a disgrace that our Fire Department is represented by Management Associates, Inc and not our Fire Chief! At all costs the IAFF Local 244 will protect the safety of its members. I commend the IAFF Local 244 Executive Board and all the General Members that worked tirelessly through this process. It is very honorable that our membership is willing to go well beyond the call of duty and sacrifice by proposing voluntary cuts to our Collective Bargaining Agreement. I assure you all that our efforts have not gone unnoticed by the public that we so proudly serve. General President Harold Schaitberger, IAFF General Counsel and our Local 244 Counsel have been notified and we are filling a lawsuit in District Court for breach of contract. Please view the attached links below with all proposals and counter proposals. Fraternally, Diego Arencón, President
