Dear Members, Today the 2011 NM Legislative session has come to an end. I am truly honored to have stood alongside the many Labor Leaders of the NMFL who represent the working families of New Mexico and together we managed to protect our members’ pensions, this year. I would like to thank our IAFF Local 244 Executive Board for their hard work and guidance during this session. I would like to acknowledge the AFD Retiree’s Association President Sam Trujillo and his members for their unwavering support. There were several IAFF Local 244 members who represented us proudly throughout the session too many to list here, thank you all for your leadership! Vice-President Robert Sanchez, Chief Steward Bob Lujan and Steward George Asi were instrumental in educating and explaining to legislators how critical our pension is to the future of the fire service in New Mexico. I would also like to acknowledge the support and counsel from IAFF Local Presidents; John Davis, David Jenkins, Flavio Martinez, Robert Sanchez and David Salas. Please take the time and write your Senators and Representatives and thank them for their support of Firefighters. This year was a great learning experience for us all. We must engage and educate one another in PERA and attend meetings whenever possible. The funded ratio for Municipal Fire Plan 5 is in jeopardy and we must work with the PERA Board this year and explore alternative measures to help the longevity of our pension. We must never forget the sacrifices that the former leaders of our great union made for us. We must fight to protect the rights and benefits of our membership both current and retired at all costs. Involvement in this process is imperative in protecting the fire service in New Mexico and most importantly protecting the Fire and Rescue personnel who make the sacrifices on the frontlines everyday. I am proud to serve my fellow Brothers and Sisters and their families. Thank you all for the privilege. Fraternally, Diego Arencón, President IAFF Local 244
