Four Houston Fire Fighters Die Battling Blaze

June 1, 2013 –– The IAFF is deeply saddened to report the line-of-duty deaths of four Houston, TX Local 341 fire fighters who gave the ultimate sacrifice from a fire in southwest Houston May 31. Captain Matthew Renaud, 35. He began his career with the Houston Fire Department in October 2001. Engineer Operator Robert Bebee, 41. He began his career with the Houston Fire Department in August of 2001. Fire Fighter Robert Garner, 29. He began his career with the Houston Fire Department in October of 2010. Fire Fighter Anne Sullivan, 24. She graduated from Houston Fire Department Academy in April. The Public Memorial Service will be held at Reliant Stadium, Wednesday, June 5 at 10:00 a.m. Funeral services for the fallen have been scheduled, but the families have requested that all funeral services be kept private (family and Fire Department personnel only). Houston Local 341 members are encouraged to watch their Houston Fire Department and personal email accounts for details. Houston Local 341 President Jeff Caynon says, "We mourn the loss of our three brothers and our sister and will forever honor their sacrifices. This tragedy underscores the inherent dangers of our profession. Please keep Houston fire fighters in your thoughts and prayers." "On behalf of the IAFF and the Executive Board, our deepest thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of our brothers and sister who gave the ultimate sacrifice, as well as those injured and all the members of Local 341," says IAFF General President Harold Schaitberger. “Our deepest condolences go out to the families and friends and their brothers and sisters in Houston,” says IAFF 11th District Vice President Sandy McGhee. “We are deeply saddened by this tragedy.” The IAFF and Local 341 are monitoring the conditions of the six injured fire fighters and will be assisting them and their families in every way possible. The Houston Astros will wear a special patch in honor of the four fallen fire fighters during the upcoming three-game series Tuesday-Thursday against the Baltimore Orioles at Minute Maid Park.
