Nominations for the 2017 General Election officially opened at the General Membership Meeting on September 14, 2017 and will close at the General Membership Meeting on November 9, 2017.
In accordance with the Albuquerque Area Fire Fighters IAFF Local 244 Bylaws: Article X, Officer Elections, Section 4. Elected Officer Terms all ‘Odd Year’ positions will be up for election in 2017. There will also be one ‘Even Year’ position up for election for a one year term due to a previous vacancy. See detailed listing below.

It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of James McLaren Jonas, the son of Lieutenant James Jonas (Rescue 6C). The Jonas family is strengthened by the overwhelming support of prayers, thoughts, and donations from our Fire Family. An informal gathering for the remembrance of their beloved son ”Mac” will be held this Saturday, October 21st at the CrossFit facility from 12-2pm, located at 581 Quantum Rd NE in Rio Rancho. All off-duty members are invited to attend and are asked to wear a fire service T-shirt in support of our brother and his family.
As we head into the Albuquerque municipal runoff election it is important that we identify and organize our collective priorities before working with a new administration. We are currently accepting letters of interest for members who are willing to serve on the IAFF Transition Team. The team will be comprised of one member from each rank and one non-rank specific member representing each support division. October 1 – As most of the country was sleeping, IAFF members from Clark County Local 1908, Henderson Local 1883 and Las Vegas Local 1285 were responding to the historic, tragic, mass shooting overnight in Las Vegas, Nevada, in which at least 58 people were killed and more than 500 injured.
While we are still gathering all of the details, the IAFF is already working to help our members. Assistant to the General President for Health, Safety & Medicine Pat Morrison is coordinating the full IAFF response, which will include mobilizing a Peer Support team and providing any other assistance our members and affiliates need as a result of this incredible event.
With so many members living in the area, including from North Las Vegas Local 1607, we know a number of off duty personnel and their families were at the event, with a number of injuries reported. We also had many more members from across the country who traveled to Vegas and were there when the shooting occurred. We have already heard from LosAngeles City Local 112, LosAngeles County Local 1014 and San Bernardino County Local 935 concerning members or their family members who were injured during the shooting.
We will release more details as they become available.

The 2017 Annual Kid’s Party will be held on Saturday October 28, 2017 at Dave & Buster’s starting at 10:00am-12:00pm.

This event will be closed to the general public and will include a buffet, raffle prizes & pre-loaded power card to be used in the game area.

As always, The New Mexico Fire & Police Pipes And Drums standing strong representing New Mexico, alongside hundreds of Pipers and Drummers from across the country and Canada. Sixteen years ago on September 11, in the greatest tragedy in the history of the fire service, 343 FDNY members died in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
“We will always remember their service, their dedication and their courage in the face of one of the most horrific moments in our union’s history,” says General President Harold Schaitberger. “We will never forget the supreme sacrifice made by our New York fire fighters who risked their lives to save others on that fateful day.”
In the tragic aftermath, the IAFF was on the ground to support our New York locals – the Uniformed Firefighters Association (UFA) Local 94 and the Uniformed Fire Officers Association (UFOA) Local 854, raising and distributing more than $167 million to the families of the fallen, bringing members from across North America to dig on the pile to search for their lost brothers and providing counseling support services.
In the days, weeks and years since, the IAFF has made every effort to always remember and never forget. The IAFF continues to make it a top priority to ensure safer and healthier working conditions and to advocate through the political process for benefits and protections for members and their families.
In 2010, after nearly a decade of lobbying, the IAFF, along with Local 94 and Local 854, won passage of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, which provides funding to monitor and treat members who become ill from exposure to toxins at ground zero. And, in 2015, the IAFF and its affiliates across the country helped to make sure the Act was permanently reauthorized so that fire fighters and others who responded after 9/11 will always receive the health care they need.? In addition, as part of the Zadroga Act, survivors of fire fighters who died from a 9/11-related illness and who applied for federal Public Safety Officer Benefits (PSOB) will now receive those benefits.
Less than a week after the anniversary of 9/11, at the IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial observance on September 16 in Colorado Springs, we will honor members who succumbed to respiratory illnesses linked to the rescue and recovery efforts at ground zero and etched onto the Wall of Honor.

The 2017 NM Fire Muster & 5k raised over $11,000 for the Fire Fighter Survivors Fund! Thanks to all the competitors, volunteers and fans for participating. Congratulations to Santa Fe City, IAFF Local 2059, winners of the Combat Challenge represented by brothers Brendan Shafer, Chris Michaels, Edward Oliphant with a team time of 3:17. Also, congratulations to Albuquerque Area, IAFF Local 244, winners of the 5K Race represented by Joe Lopez 1st place, James Perez 2nd place & Kyle Stephenson 3rd place. Special thanks to Donavan Jacks and Daniel Encinias for their leadership in organizing this event!
