Brother Martin Salazar responds to the call for the TOUR of DUTY cross country run to New York City in honor of 9/11. He volunteered to drive a 34ft Command Vehicle to Oklahoma City (on his own time) to facilitate continued rehab for the runners. He will also join them for the run in Oklahoma. We have arranged for IAFF Local 157 members to greet Martin when he arrives. TOUR OF DUTY - "On Thursday August 12th 2010 at precisely 8.46 AM the Tour of Duty run made its way from the Santa Monica Pier, Los Angeles, aiming to arrive in New York City on September 11th 4,600 miles and 31 days later, it is a journey that we are very much looking forward to. The beginnings of this run, this event, go back many years. The Melbourne members of the Tour of Duty team have been participating in, and organizing road running events since 1983, claiming the World record for marathon relay road running whilst circumnavigating Australia in 1983 (15,600KMs), then again in 1991, increasing that record to 17,500KMs. It is a long and proud History. That men and women that answer the call to duty, that live their lives selflessly for others every day, that believe it is their duty is to serve, would fall on this day, would not go home, would leave behind loved ones, would make the ultimate sacrifice. It is this awareness of family and the understanding of the wider global community of people that sacrifice their lives through service that initiated The Tour of Duty. The Tour of Duty Run is an emotional statement. It is the coming together of Australian and American fire-fighters, police officers, military personnel and emergency service workers. We run to remember the people of 9/11, to honor their sacrifice, their courage, their devotion and commitment to duty. The Albuquerque Area Firefighters, IAFF Local 244 sponsored the New Mexico’s Bravest Football Team. They went to the Presbyterian Kid’s Hospital and gave t-shirts, autographed footballs, and team pictures to all the children. Our firefighters represented the union with true compassion and professionalism. The children and parents were very thankful for the time that we spent with them. The Fire Fighters themselves were moved by the visit and are committed to making next years event even better! The Executive Board would like to thank Chaplain Mike Trujillo, Chaplain Matt Caward, Seferino Vigil, Oscar Vasquez, Brad Kornrumph, Jacinto Dominguez, Joe Saiz and all the Firefighters of the New Mexico’s Bravest Football Team for their hard work and dedication.

Diego, I want to take time to thank you for presenting the Union Charter Members the certificates of appreciation at our June 12th memorial function .... Today another of these brother retiree's passed away ( Paul Garcia Sr. ) and it meant a lot to him and his family to have received recognition for his involvement in starting our Union ..... Back in the early 1950's it must have been extremely difficult to be involved in starting our Union as it meant possible employment termination for these Fire Fighters ..... We are quickly loosing these Charter members that were the backbone of Local 244 .... These brothers paved the way for us and taking time to say " THANK YOU " means so much to us Retired Union Brothers ..... I appreciate you and your staff for doing something that was long over-due ..... Please convey our sincere thank you to Local 244 members. Dear Members, Mayor Berry has violated our contract and our collective bargaining rights by unilaterally reducing our wages. We firmly maintain our position that we have never consented in any way to open contract negotiations, request mediation or submit any last best offers. The Labor Management Relations Ordinance (LMRO) is not applicable since our contract is valid through June 2011 and we are not in negotiations. Therefore, how is it that the Mayor has the authority to unilaterally impose pay cuts if we never engaged in contract negotiations? Since April we, in good faith, have offered numerous concessions that amount to far more than the Mayor needed to avoid pay cuts consistant with City Council's budget. We also offered to defer our raises until there was evidence that the City could afford them. All of our offers were rejected. Instead the Berry Administration wastes money in paying Management Assoc, Inc. to do its bidding. By trying to impose his will only proves that this is not about sound management and balancing the budget, it is about a political and social agenda that has no place in the Mayor’s office. He would rather balance the budget not through sound management, but by taking pay from our families and wasting taxpayer’s money on Management Assoc, Inc. This is a blatant disregard for the value of Fire Fighters in Albuquerque. We filed a law suit for breach of contract on June 24, 2010. The IAFF General Counsel and our Local Counsel will be working together on this issue. We will keep you updated as more information becomes available.
